Officially, Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB is a specialized edition of Windows 10 Enterprise that promises the longest intervals between feature upgrades of any version of the operating system. The twice-annual feature upgrades delivered to other channels will not be offered to LTSB systems. Those upgrades, however, are optional, or at least optional to some degree more on that later.

Each Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB build is supported with security updates for a decade, the same year lifespan Microsoft has designated and maintained for ages.

The decade is split into two equal halves: “Mainstream” support for the first five years, “Extended” for the second. Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB runs on Specialized systems – such as PCs that control medical equipment, point-of-sale systems, and ATMs which often require a longer servicing option because of their purpose. These devices typically perform a single important task and it’s more important that these devices be kept as stable and secure as possible than up to date with user interface changes.

As a general guideline, a PC with Microsoft Office installed is a general-purpose device, typically used by an information worker, and therefore it is better suited for the [non-LTSB servicing channels. This includes support for features such as Windows Autopilot. Security: This version of Windows 10 includes security improvements for threat protection, information protection, and identity protection. Threat protection and Microsoft Defender for Endpoint: The Microsoft Defender for Endpoint platform includes the security pillars shown in the following diagram.

In this version of Windows, Defender for Endpoint includes powerful analytics, security stack integration, and centralized management for better detection, prevention, investigation, response, and management. Attack surface reduction: Attack surface reduction includes host-based intrusion prevention systems such as controlled folder access.

This feature can help prevent ransomware and other destructive malware from changing your personal files. You can add specific rules for a WSL process just as you would for any Windows process. Endpoint detection and response: Endpoint detection and response is improved. Enterprise customers can now take advantage of the entire Windows security stack with Microsoft Defender Antivirus detections and Device Guard blocks being surfaced in the Microsoft Defender for Endpoint portal.

Windows Hello for Business: New features in Windows Hello enable a better device lock experience, using multifactor unlock with new location and user proximity signals. Using Bluetooth signals, you can configure your Windows 10 device to automatically lock when you walk away from it, or to prevent others from accessing the device when you are not present.

No, clearly not. But our users need a consistent experience, not new “features” that add useless game tiles to the start menu. Thank you for the reminder.

Specialized systems—such as PCs that control medical equipment, point-of-sale systems, and ATMs—often require a longer servicing option because of their purpose. The LTSB servicing model prevents Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB devices from receiving the usual feature updates and provides only quality updates to ensure that device security stays up to date.

LTSB is not intended for deployment on most or all the PCs in an organization; it should be used only for special-purpose devices. As a general guideline, a PC with Microsoft Office installed is a general-purpose device, typically used by an information worker, and therefore it is better suited for the CB or CBB servicing branch.

I’ve seen some posts regarding some new updates that supposedly ‘fix’ the store crap from coming back, but until I see some definitive information that there is a reliable method of removing all of that and keeping it off, we’ll stay on LTSB. I know a lot of people will regurgitate the MS statement regarding what LTSB is ‘intended’ for, but honestly the ‘feature updates’ that LTSB is missing aren’t things I would necessarily want that often anyway.

For our users, it’s more important to have a consistent interface that they can get used to. I seriously get support tickets when people’s desktop icons move Having ever changing store tiles, start menu, etc etc would probably make my users’ heads explode and definitely fill up our Spiceworks helpdesk with tickets. These days keeping up with OS updates, to keep 1 step ahead of the ‘bad guys’ to bring in new security features is an important part of cybersecurity.

The next Windows 10 Enterprise LTSB version is not planned to release until so you’ll miss out on years of new security innovations and features. This topic has been locked by an administrator and is no longer open for commenting. To continue this discussion, please ask a new question.
